10 by 12 that is 120 square feet or 13 1/3 yards.   installation should be around 100$.  because that falls under the "minimum" the minimum amount a carpet installer will come to a job for. mine is 100 close by  and 150 if it's more than 20 miles or so.          a carpet at 1.50 a Sq ft is going to be  a decent carpet. that's 180$ or so.      pad figure 50 cents a Sq ft that's a good pad another 60 bucks..     so somewhere in the area of 350$ If you use this figure.

The price of installing tack strip is.... 0$   That's right it should be included in the carpet installation price.        So just know this...... If they are trying to charge you for laying the tack strip. then they are trying to "ream" you  or get as much money out of you as they can.

Installing carpet on stairs

Putting carpet on stairs is best left for the professional for they can be tricky sometimes.      But if you do want to tempt it yourself  well maybe this will help..               it's really pretty simple especially if they are just "box steps" no spindles no wrapping.      first measure the stairs  from wall to wall. Cut your strip of carpet. lay it out on the steps.  starting at the bottom. staple the very bottom. you can do it without a stapler use your stair tool and tuck the bottom in. you will need a piece of tackstrips along the bottom.  when the bottom is fastened good take your kicker and kick it all the way across to the other piece of tackstrip.  then take the stair tool and rubber mallet or hammer. and hit the carpet inbetween the two steps.  and repeat.
