Length x Width, divide by 9=sq yds
The way to figure how much carpet and pad your going need is,, the length of the room multiplied by the width of the room. That will give you the square footage. To get yards you take your square footage and divide that by nine, there is your yardage.
Now that's just the formula, It's best to go to the room to be installed and say you have a room that is 11'6" x 15' well 12' wide carpet would work great and it's 15' long, so you need a 12x15 which is 20 yards.
Now say you have a room that is 16' x 18' If your using 12' wide carpet you can get a 24' piece, and depending on where you want the seams, you could use a 18' piece and cut a 6' piece 4' wide 3 times. or a 16' piece with 2 8' pieces cut 6' wide seamed together
